It is difficult to say which Packer will have a breakout season, but Packers’ tight end Robert Tonyan is going to stand out amongst the rest. This is a make-or-break year for the Packers’ fifth-year tight end. Tonyan is coming off ACL surgery and is eager to get back to prime-time shape. In 2020, Tonyan exploded for 52 catches 586 yards, and 11 touchdowns.

The connection between him and Rodgers was obvious. Tonyan became the most reliable receiving target in all of football. With Davante Adams leaving for Vegas, Rodgers needs another reliable receiving target. The question is can Tonyan be healthy enough to stay on the field for a full season?

Robert Tonyan Must Have a Breakout Season

If healthy, Tonyan can easily have fifty-plus targets and close to a dozen touchdowns. He can become one of the main passing threats, like how George Kittle is for the San Fransico 49ers. Tonyan set the bar high in 2020 and there is no reason why he can’t have another breakout season. According to Pro Football Focus, during the 2020 season, Tonyan was ranked first in catch percentage (89.7), drop percentage (0.0), passer rating (148.3), and tied for first in touchdowns.

The Packers’ medical staff confirmed Tonyan is ahead of schedule and could be ready for the start of the regular season. Expect Tonyan to bounce back better than ever.

Contract Year

As an undrafted free agent, Tonyan had to first earn his way onto an NFL roster. With an excellent work ethic, he climbed his way up the depth chart one spot at a time. Finally, he is being noticed for his hard work. Unfortunately, because of his knee injury, Tonyan only signed a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million. According to ESPN, Tonyan received a signing bonus of one million dollars and is eligible to receive $1.515 million in per-game active roster bonuses. In addition, he can earn $1.75 million through playing-time incentives and making the Pro Bowl. Tonyan is banking on himself to perform at a high level.

2022 Projections

2022 will be a breakout season for the potential Pro Bowl tight end. Tonyan will come back stronger from his 2021 ACL injury. Tonyan resigning with the Packers is a win-win for both sides. The Packers keep a promising young tight end while Tonyan will again try to produce at a high level, hoping of getting a long-term contract. Tonyan’s breakout season will consist of close to 55 catches, 650 yards, and 12 touchdowns, breaking the Packers’ tight end touchdown record. Currently, Tonyan ties Paul Coffman for the Packers’ tight end record with 11 touchdowns, but that record will soon be broken with Tonyan’s 2022 breakout season.
